Importance of Incision Sites and Scar Management in Liposuction

2023-08-30

As the mandate to wear masks indoors and outdoors is lifted and the COVID-19 crisis level will be lowered from ‘serious’ to ‘alert’ in June, many people are starting to focus on self-care in preparation for the summer holidays. They are gearing up to enjoy a relaxing and happy time at their vacation destinations after a long period.

With the holiday season approaching, inquiries about surgeries like liposuction are also increasing. Liposuction is a procedure that removes subcutaneous fat from the body, allowing for an improved body shape by targeting specific areas.

However, many individuals are concerned about scars resulting from the surgery. Liposuction involves making small incisions in the skin to insert thin cannulas that remove subcutaneous fat, which inevitably leaves scars.

Ideally, all clinics would perform the surgery with minimal incisions, but the location and number of incisions depend on the surgeon’s method, the area being treated, and the extent of the surgery. Therefore, it is essential to thoroughly discuss with your surgeon beforehand to understand where and how large the incisions will be.

While there is individual variation, incision scars typically heal to a point where they are not noticeable within 3-6 months and continue to fade after six months. Proper post-operative care is crucial, which includes using waterproof bandages when showering and diligently applying scar creams or sunscreen to the affected areas.

Informing your surgeon about any pre-existing conditions such as skin prone to pigmentation or keloids can also lead to better management and care.

Dr. Seo Yongseung of Lesarts Plastic Surgery advises, "If you are concerned about scars from liposuction, it is best to opt for minimal incisions in places that are not visible or can be easily hidden. It is advisable to consult with a highly experienced and knowledgeable surgeon. Additionally, ensure the clinic has a system in place for managing the entire surgical process and offers comprehensive scar management solutions post-surgery."
